Merchants, Statutes of
Statuta de mercatoribus, 1283 and 1285. The first statute made provision for the collection of monies owed by merchants. In 1283 the mayors of London, York, Bristol, Lincoln, Winchester and Shrewsbury were empowered with the *sheriff to seize goods to the value of the debt. This did not work as intended and the second statute of 1285 was issued, with somewhat different provisions. This time, debts were enrolled and the mayor would act if the debt were unpaid on the due date. Defaulting debtors were imprisoned and their property and land could be seized and sold if necessary.
